We all have 24 hours in a day, but how do we manage our time effectively and balance various priorities? For most people at least one-third of their time is unproductive due to lack of time management, planning and structure.
We all want to manage our time effectively, but how do we learn time management? Use these seven techniques to manage your time more effectively:
1 Manage every minute of every day: The key is to manage your time, not to let it manage you. It is important to use calendars and to write everything down.
2 Distinguish between the urgent from the important: Use Eisenhower’s Decision Matrix to prioritise your tasks based on importance rather than urgency.
3 Remember that distracted work is useless: Make a list of distractions, and then avoid them. Recognise that your best work comes when you are focused.
4 Keep in mind that more time doesn’t mean more productivity: We are more productive when we have less time because it is a necessity. The best way to use this to your advantage is to impose deadlines on yourself.
5 Try old-fashioned pen and paper: Using a pen and paper planner or notebook allows you to keep track of your goals and weekly to-do lists.
6 Make use of digital calendars: Use a digital calendar to manage your daily schedule, appointments and meetings. An electronic calendar allows for real-time adjustments and many sync with other electronic calendars.
7 Use the Pomodoro Technique : When faced with a task, break it down into short, timed intervals, called ‘Pomodoros’ (traditionally 25 minutes long), separated by short breaks. This trains your brain to focus for short periods and helps you stay on top of deadlines.
